Composting in Southwark

To increase the amount of organic waste diverted from landfill is one of the key strategies outlined in the Southwark Waste Recycling Strategy. Consequently Southwark Council strongly promotes the recycling of organic waste and has initiated the following recycling programmes to enable residents to compost kitchen and garden waste

Provision of subsidised Home Compost Kits to the residents of Southwark

The Home Composting Kits consist of a high quality Compost Bin (70cm x 70cm x 82cm(high) – 325 litre capacity), a Kitchen bin with a sealed lid for the separation of kitchen organic waste, a free guide to Home Composting and access to the CRISP free Home Composting Helpline.

The Home Composting Kits are available to Southwark residents at £10 each (+ £5 delivery) a saving of over £60 on the commercial retail cost.

The project is funded in part by Southwark Council and the London Recycling Fund.

The project began in September 2003 and has so far provided over 3,800 Home Composting Kits to local residents of Southwark.

 Southwark Worm Composting

In Southwark over 64% of residents live in local authority or private flats without access to a garden and find themselves excluded from conventional home composting.  Worm composting, however, is a highly suitable alternative method to convert organic kitchen waste into compost and can be conducted with minimal space requirements on balconies or small patio gardens. As part of a Crossriver Partnership funded pilot project CRISP designed a high-quality low-cost wormery which was distributed to 50 Southwark residents living in flats without garden and schools in 2003.

As a result of the success of this mini pilot scheme Southwark Council is currently promoting the use of wormeries to residents across the borough.

Funded by Southwark Council the Southwark Wormery Scheme, has been extended and has currently provided over 550 wormeries to local Southwark residents.  The wormeries are distributed by CRISP and are manufactured as part of a work experience and training scheme run by the homeless support charity St Mungo's.

The aim is to provide all Southwark residents in flats with access to their own wormery.

Note

In addition for residents who live in a property with garden Southwark Waste Management Department offers a collection service of garden waste. This service complements rather than replaces home composting by providing collections for residents who have excessive garden waste or garden waste which is not suitable for home composting.

Residents with a garden are provided with a brown wheelie bin, reusable jute bags or single use paper bags. Garden waste is collected throughout the year every two weeks on the same week day as dry recyclables are collected.  For more information contact 0207 525 2000 or http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/environment/RecyclingPages/
